Dear Sir

Please be advised that I changed the filters at The Escarpment on 15th January 2009 as part of the agreed regular service. I must draw to your attention the poor state of the filters and the level of contamination evident therein, particularly as the water passing through the filters comes exclusively from the bore on the property.

All filters contained a high level of contamination from sediment and, it appears, from iron staining. The level of contamination appeared significantly more prevalent than when I have changed the filters (at six monthly intervals) previously.

I need to say that I am alarmed at what appears to be a significant reduction in the water quality from the ground water source and, should the reduction in quality and the increase in contaminants continue, the viability of the ground water source may be threatened in the near future.

It is not known with certainty just what demands there are upon the local underground water sources, but there certainly is evidence that the water source you presently tap into appears to be under threat as a reliable provider of quality water.

Yours faithfully

Maurie Payne

Reclaimed wastewater is the effluents of a sewage treatment plant (STP) that are adequately and reliably treated with different wastewater treatment process and is an important supplemental water resource for urban use, food crop irrigation, and recreational impoundments in many countries, especially for drought areas [1,2]. Besides the sensory problems related to odor, color, and turbidity, the occurrence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the reclaimed water is of concern when the water is used for agricultural irrigation, landscape irrigation, and groundwater recharge.

Providing sustainable water services for Brisbane requires smarter thinking and innovative solutions.

Industry is only one source of water pollution. Other sources include sewage treatment plants, households, streets and footpaths.

What is water pollution?

Research throughout the world is establishing design and performance criteria for the removal of BOD, suspended solids, nitrification and denitrification, phosphorous removal and disinfection via wetlands.

Salmonella bacteria continue to be an important public-health problem and have a serious economic impact on the U.S. poultry industry. Although the majority of human infections traceable to Salmonella enteritidis are related to egg consumption, this serotype has also been isolated from a variety of nonegg food items such as meat, vegetables and fish. In Southern California, S. enteritidis phage type 4 infection is the predominant serotype found in human patients. However, the organism has also been found in municipal sewage effluent and in rodent and poultry environments.

Changes observed in gene expression and hormone production suggest the presence in Hong Kong coastal waters of pollutants with endocrine disruption potential and others of significant toxic effects.

Floodwaters pick up sewage and chemicals from roads, farms and factories. If your home has been flooded, protect your family's health by cleaning up your house right away. Throw out foods and medicines that may have met floodwater.

However, muddy water compromises the aesthetic values of the water. Further, large amounts of sediments in the water can also impact on aquatic life by clogging the gills and smothering stony habitat. Finally, high frequency of high turbidity is the sign of accelerated land erosion.
